Mt. Hope has gone a perfect 3-0 against Westerly recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Huskies will venture away from home to challenge the Bulldogs at 5:00 p.m. Mt. Hope has given up an average of 6.9 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Smithfield hit Mt. Hope with a seven-run first inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Huskies lost 11-1 to the Sentinels. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Huskies have suffered against the Sentinels since May 11, 2017.
Mt. Hope saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Trace Dubois, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run. Colin Padovich also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Westerly made easy work of Chariho on Saturday and carried off an 8-2 victory. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Bulldogs have posted against the Chargers since May 4, 2019.
Jack Zerbarini and Tom Fiore were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Zerbarini tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Fiore struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. The dominant performance also gave Zerbarini a new career-high in strikeouts (three). At the plate, Zerbarini went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Fiore went 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Grayson Simmons was excellent, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Tyler Falcone, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.
Mt. Hope's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Westerly, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Mt. Hope has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Westerly struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Mt. Hope came out on top in a nail-biter against Westerly in their previous meeting back in May of 2021, sneaking past 3-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Huskies since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
