Basketball Recap: Wharton Takes a Loss

Wharton came up into this matchup off a tough 27-point defeat last Thursday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of the Alvarado Indians by a score of 45-43 on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1258th, while the Indians are ranked 510th).

Alvarado got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Carleigh Ray out in front who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine boards. The dominant performance also gave Ray a new career-high in blocks (five). Makynna Baldwin was another key player, going 5 for 10 on her way to 12 points and six assists.

This is the second loss in a row for Wharton and nudges their season record down to 5-14. As for Alvarado, their victory bumped their record up to 10-12.

Wharton will square off against Needville at 6:00 p.m. on January 3, 2025. Wharton is facing Needville at the right time seeing as Needville is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Alvarado, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 51-24 loss against East Bernard on the 28th.
