Basketball Recap: Mathis' Luck Changes for the Better on Friday

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Taft, Mathis was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They walked away with a 38-25 victory over the Odem Owls. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Pirates as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.

Mathis found their leader in sophomore Amerie Smith, who posted 18 points. Another player making a difference was Kaitlyn Herrera, who put up ten points and three steals.

Mathis smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive matchups.

Mathis' victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-11. As for Odem, their defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 8-19.

Mathis will welcome West Oso at 7:30 p.m. on January 24th. West Oso will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something Mathis surely won't give up without a fight. As for Odem, they will be playing at home against Aransas Pass at 5:45 p.m. on Monday.
