Basketball Game Preview: Wellington Eagles vs. Berthoud Spartans

The Wellington Eagles will face off against the Berthoud Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Wellington is looking for their season's first win.

Wellington is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Severance on Tuesday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Wellington had to suffer through a 65-30 loss at the hands of Severance. The Eagles were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 48-19.

Meanwhile, Berthoud hadn't done well against Roosevelt recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Berthoud walked away with a 66-57 victory over Roosevelt. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Spartans.

Wellington better keep an eye on Ryan Callies. He was instrumental in Berthoud's win, going 8-for-18 to rack up 27 points and three steals. Callies has become a key player for Berthoud: the team is undefeated when he posts at least 20 points, but 4-12 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Isaac Erickson, who posted 13 points and six rebounds.

Berthoud's win bumped their record up to 7-12. As for Wellington, their loss dropped their record down to 0-21.

Wellington took a serious blow against Berthoud in their previous meeting back in January, falling 90-50. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Erickson, who went 9-for-14 en route to 22 points in addition to eight boards and five assists.
