The Newport Buffaloes will face off against the Susquenita Blackhawks at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Newport is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Newport is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 13 runs on Wednesday, they were much more limited against Halifax on Friday. They lost 11-1 to the Wildcats. The Buffaloes haven't had much luck with the Wildcats recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.
Meanwhile, Susquenita waltzed into their game on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the WolfPack an 18-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Blackhawks, who have now won ten matches by eight runs or more so far this season.
Ryan Schoppy made a big impact no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over five innings pitched. Those ten strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off two home runs, four runs, and four RBI while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. Those home runs marked the first that he has launched this season.
In other batting news, Billy Syster was incredible, going 3-for-5 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. Justin Reidlinger was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Susquenita was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .419. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in four consecutive contests.
Susquenita pushed their record up to 12-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Newport, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Newport has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Susquenita struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 11 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Newport skirted past Susquenita 4-2 when the teams last played last Monday. Do the Buffaloes have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Blackhawks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
