Baseball Recap: Caldwell Triumphs

Caldwell came out on top against Sparta on Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run third inning. The Chiefs narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Spartans 7-6. This was payback for the Chiefs, who suffered a 5-3 loss the last time these two teams met.

Marco Sozio was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Sozio wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Dante Placenti, who went 2-for-3 with one run. Nick Arvanites also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Caldwell's victory bumped their record up to 10-7. As for Sparta, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-7.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Caldwell will take on Barringer at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Blue Bears have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.94 runs per game on average), something the Chiefs will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Sparta, they will face off against Chatham at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
