Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Comes Up Short

If St. Mary was riding high fresh off their 46-15 takedown of Marcos de Niza last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The St. Mary's Knights had to suffer through a 88-38 loss at the hands of the Sunnyslope Vikings. While losing is never fun, the Knights can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 146th, while the Vikings are ranked 11th).

Sunnyslope's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amelia Mickelson, who went 5 of 11 en route to 13 points along with seven blocks and six boards. The dominant performance also gave Mickelson a new career-high in steals (six). Another player making a difference was Maggie Luba, who went 9 for 18 on her way to 23 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals.

St. Mary's loss dropped their record down to 6-10. As for Sunnyslope, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 15-7.

St. Mary's has already played their next game (against Mesquite), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Sunnyslope will host Corona del Sol at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
