After both having extra time off, the Discovery Canyon Thunder and the Canon City Tigers will shake off the cobwebs and face off against one another at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Discovery Canyon took a loss when they played away from home back in December of 2024, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed two weeks ago. The stars were shining brightly for them in a 53-35 victory over Harrison.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Discovery Canyon to victory, but perhaps none more so than Natalie Neuhaus, who posted 16 points along with six rebounds and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Addison Hulse, who had eight points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.
Neuhaus wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Discovery Canyon was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Harrison only posted three assists.
Meanwhile, Canon City was fully in charge back in December of 2024, breezing past Brighton 56-14. The matchup marked the Tigers' most dominant win of the season so far.
Canon City's win came from a few key players Discovery Canyon will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Lorelai Murphy, who posted nine points and seven steals. Murphy is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least three every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kristyn Barnes, who earned 11 points and seven rebounds.
Canon City's victory bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Discovery Canyon, their win bumped their record up to 5-3.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Discovery Canyon has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.1 boards per game. However, it's not like Canon City struggles in that department as they've been averaging 35 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Discovery Canyon might still be hurting after the 56-30 loss they got from Canon City when the teams last played back in February of 2024. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Discovery Canyon was down 33-10.
