Basketball Game Preview: Sonora Broncos vs. Christoval Cougars

The Sonora Broncos will head out on the road to square off against the Christoval Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Sonora is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.3 points per game this season.

Last Tuesday, Sonora came up short against Reagan County and fell 54-45. The Broncos have struggled against the Owls recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.

Despite their loss, Sonora saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Evan Arredondo, who went 6 for 8 on his way to 12 points and six rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Kameryn Aguero, who posted 14 points.

Even though they lost, Sonora smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in eight consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Christoval was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past Reagan County 70-37. The Cougars have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven matches by 25 points or more this season.

Christoval pushed their record up to 14-9 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 28 points. As for Sonora, they now have a losing record at 11-12.

Sonora came out on top in a nail-biter against Christoval in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, sneaking past 48-45. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sonora since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
