Football Preview: Marion Bulldogs vs. Gonzales Apaches
The Marion Bulldogs will challenge the Gonzales Apaches at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Gonzales took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Marion, who comes in off a win.
Marion took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Long Creek 42-6 at home. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 28-0.
Marion's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Christian Sanchez, who rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.0 yards per carry. Sanchez was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 51 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Kade Pape, who threw for 189 yards and four touchdowns on only 12 passes.
Marion's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged three passes before it was all said and done. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Hayden Balser.
Meanwhile, Gonzales came up short against Hallettsville on Friday and fell 14-7. While losing is never fun, the Apaches can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 707th, while the Brahmas are ranked 323rd).
The victory got Marion back to even at 1-1. As for Gonzales, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 0-2.
