Baseball Game Preview: Gretna Hawks vs. Nelson County Governors

The Gretna Hawks are taking a road trip to face off against the Nelson County Governors at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Neither of those teams managed to put together many runs in their previous contests, so the offenses might be a little more motivated than usual.

On Monday, Gretna came up short against Altavista and fell 6-2. The loss continues a trend for the Hawks in their meetings with the Colonels: they've now lost five in a row.

Gretna saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brendan Smith, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Meanwhile, Nelson County hadn't done well against Appomattox County recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way two weeks ago. The Governors skirted past the Raiders 2-1. The victory was familiar territory for the Governors, who have now won four matchups in a row.

Kevin Knight spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 12 Ks.

Nelson County's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Gretna, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-6.

Gretna took their win against Nelson County when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-3 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hawks since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
