Preview: Banning Pilots vs. Woodland Christian Cardinals
The Banning Pilots will face off against the Woodland Christian Cardinals at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Banning comes in on five and Woodland Christian on 14.
With a playoff game on the line, Banning rose to the challenge on Saturday. Everything went their way against the Torreys as they made off with a 41-21 victory. The result was nothing new for Banning, who have now won six matches by 20 points or more so far this season.
Banning's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ryan Deangelis, who rushed for 188 yards and a touchdown. Steven Perez and his 112 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Banning's victory.
Meanwhile, Woodland Christian stacked a 12th blowout onto their ever-increasing hoard on Saturday. They blew past Orland 28-0 on the road. Woodland Christian pushed the score to 21-0 by the end of the third, a deficit Orland had little chance of recovering from.
Woodland Christian's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Isaiah Hunt led the charge by rushing for 103 yards on only 14 carries, while also throwing for 72 yards and a touchdown. The team also got some help courtesy of Devin Herrera, who gained 118 total yards and a touchdown.
Banning's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-6. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 37.0 points per game. As for Woodland Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 14-0.
Saturday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Banning has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 187.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Woodland Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 160.1 per game. It's looking like Saturday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
