Baseball Recap: Catholic Central Takes a Loss

Catholic Central had lost eight straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Friday they dropped down to 1-7 to make it nine. They came up short against the Weir Red Riders, falling 11-2. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Catholic Central saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tommy Symington, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

As for Weir, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-10. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games.

On Weir's side, Nick DiMatteis and Mathew Geer were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, DiMatteis pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Geer pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had over his last five contests. At the plate, DiMatteis earned one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while Geer got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three RBI. DiMatteis has become a key player for Weir: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 4-10 otherwise.

Catholic Central didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 24-2 win against Wellsville on the 18th. As for Weir, they will take on Steubenville at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Red Riders' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Big Red have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season.
