It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Paraclete ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They pulled ahead with a 43-42 photo finish over the St. Paul Swordsmen. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Spirits.
Joseph Mesa had another great game (as he tends to do), throwing for 206 yards and four TDs, while also rushing for 82 yards and one score. Those 82 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Paraclete also got a significant boost from Kyle Fulton Jr, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 138 yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Paraclete was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 220 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. Paul only rushed for 121.
Several Swordsmen players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Gabriel Castaneda, who threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns while completing 81.8% of his passes. St. Paul's leading receiver Gavin Lannon was Castaneda's top target yet again, picking up 151 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Paraclete's record is now 8-2. As for St. Paul, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 3-7 record.
The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Paraclete is taking a road trip to take on Woodrow Wilson at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bruins' defense has only allowed 13.7 points per game this season, so the Spirits' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for St. Paul, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Etiwanda at 7:00 p.m.
