Basketball Recap: Varina Takes a Loss

Varina extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to five on Thursday, dropping them down to 0-2. They took a 39-28 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Freeman Mavericks. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Blue Devils of the 59-35 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2024.

Despite the loss, Varina still got an impressive performance from Charlese Veney, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 19 boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaliyah Straughter, who posted a point in addition to ten rebounds and four blocks.

As for Freeman, their victory was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 1-0. Those road wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 24.0 points on average over those games.

Freeman's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Shelby Adams, who had ten points. Those ten points gave Adams a new career-high. Kayleigh Perks was another key player, putting up eight points.

Coming up, Varina will head out to square off against John Marshall at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Freeman, they will be defending their home court for the first time this season when they go up against Hermitage at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. This will be the Mavericks' first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
