Softball Recap: Make It Six in a Row for Gridley

Gridley came tearing into Thursday's contest with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Truckee Wolverines with a sharp 24-5 win. Considering the Bulldogs have won 14 matchups by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Reese Stevens made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and two doubles. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Gridley let Avery Mendenhall and Payton Burresch run wild. Mendenhall went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI, while Burresch got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. That's the most runs Burresch has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Alexis Alcantar, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs.

Gridley kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in 13 consecutive games.

Gridley pushed their record up to 14-4 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Truckee, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-17 record this season.

Gridley will face off against Las Plumas at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Truckee, they will welcome South Tahoe at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Wolverines will need to watch out since the Vikings have now posted at least ten runs in their last five matches.
