Preview: Cairo Syrupmakers vs. Westover Patriots
The Cairo Syrupmakers will be playing at home against the Westover Patriots at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Cairo is out to stop a 13-game streak of losses at home dating back to last season.
Last Friday, Cairo took a serious blow against the Hawks, falling 87-14. Cairo has struggled against the Hawks recently, as their game on Friday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Makhia Evers, who scored five points along with seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, while it was all tied up 18-18 at halftime, Westover was not quite the Bearcats' equal in the second half on Friday. Westover fell 46-38 to the Bearcats. Westover has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Like Westover, they lost despite seeing results from several players. Jada Landers led the charge by scoring ten points along with seven rebounds and five steals. Another player making a difference was Sydney Donaldson, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and six steals.
Cairo's loss dropped their record down to 1-18. As for Westover, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-12 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Cairo have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.9 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Westover struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.4 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Cairo was dealt a bruising 66-35 defeat at the hands of the Patriots in their previous matchup on January 12th. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Donaldson, who dropped a double-double on 31 points and ten rebounds. Now that Cairo knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
