The Gulliver Prep Raiders will head out on the road to square off against the Somerset Academy South Homestead Hurricanes at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Gulliver Prep is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Last Tuesday, Gulliver Prep came up short against Chaminade-Madonna and fell 7-4. The Raiders have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Jordyn Mullen was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and six unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
Mullen wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Alexa Smith, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Somerset Academy South Homestead came tearing into Tuesday's match with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 12-11 W against the Bulldogs.
Like Gulliver Prep, Somerset Academy South Homestead also got a great game from a two-way player: Casey Hodges. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over 4.2 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits (and only one walk). Hodges was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Brianna Vasallo was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing six bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those six stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Gabriela Lopez also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Somerset Academy South Homestead's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-2. As for Gulliver Prep, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Gulliver Prep hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .351. However, it's not like Somerset Academy South Homestead struggles in that department as they've averaged .434. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Gulliver Prep couldn't quite get it done against Somerset Academy South Homestead in their previous meeting back in February as they fell 14-11. Can the Raiders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
