While Cardinal Newman might've come up empty on Tuesday, Max Gonzalez wasn't going down without a fight. Gonzalez turned in nothing short of a gem, striking out nine batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

Even though Gonzalez couldn't lead Cardinal Newman over St. John Paul II Academy, he won't have to wait long to try again: the teams have a rematch scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sadly, Gonzalez's big day wasn't enough to stop the loss, which snapped the Crusaders' 12-game streak of wins at home.
