Baseball Game Preview: Greenwood Christian Hawks vs. Spartanburg Day Griffins

Greenwood Christian is 8-1 against Spartanburg Day since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Greenwood Christian Hawks will be playing at home against the Spartanburg Day Griffins at 6:00 p.m. Greenwood Christian is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.

Greenwood Christian's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Whitmire with a sharp 10-0 win. The victory continues a trend for the Hawks in their matchups with the Wolverines: they've now won four in a row.

Not much got past Michael Davis, who gave up just four hits to keep Whitmire off the board.

At the plate, Leland Reed was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kade Heaton, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.

Greenwood Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Whitmire only posted a batting average of .190.

Meanwhile, Spartanburg Day unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They fell just short of Oakbrook Prep by a score of 8-7 on Tuesday. Sadly, the defeat continues a streak the team started last season, making it eight in a row.

Matty Lyle and Coleman Tolbert did some serious damage despite the final result: Lyle scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4, while Tolbert scored two runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Jackson Harris was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

The win got Greenwood Christian back to even at 4-4. As for Spartanburg Day, their loss dropped their record down to 0-1.

Greenwood Christian took their victory against Spartanburg Day in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 13-5. Will Greenwood Christian repeat their success, or does Spartanburg Day have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
