Basketball Recap: Thornton Beats Skyview for Their Ninth Straight Victory

Thornton had won eight straight games and Clayton Jones did his part to make it nine on Thursday. The Thornton Trojans walked away with a 57-47 victory over the Skyview Wolverines thanks in part to Jones, who dropped a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. His evening made it 21 games in a row in which he has scored at least 16 points.

Another player making a difference was Isaiah Cushing, who went 5-for-8 to rack up 14 points. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in points.

Despite the defeat, Skyview saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Gabriel Guevara went 6-for-9 on his way to 13 points and five steals. Guevara has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 14 times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Erick Rodriguez, who posted nine points and five boards.

Thornton's win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-5. As for Skyview, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 13 of their last 14 games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 6-14 record this season.

Thornton didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 56-44 victory against Adams City on the 18th. As for Skyview, they will venture away from home to face off against Fort Lupton at 2:00 p.m. on February 22nd. One thing working in Fort Lupton's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last ten contests.
