Softball Recap: Crowley Beats Abbeville for Their Fourth Straight Victory

After losing to Abbeville the last time they met, Crowley decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Gent blew past the Wildcats 15-1 on Monday. The Gent might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten matches by ten runs or more this season.

Erika Hebert was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one double and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zailey Smith, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was China Williams, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.

The win (which was Crowley's fourth in a row) raised their record to 13-10. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Abbeville, with the defeat, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 9-12.

Looking ahead, Crowley will head out to take on Vermilion Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagles have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.71 runs per game on average), something the Gent will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Abbeville, they will face off against Jeanerette at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats are facing the Tigers at the right time seeing as the Tigers are stuck on a six-game losing streak.
