League recap: Oxford extends winning streak with victory over Lake Cormorant

5A Region 1 recap November 13, 2013

Oxford added to the longest winning streak in 5A Region 1 this week by beating Lake Cormorant, 45-17. The victory was the 11th in a row for the Chargers.

West Point took down Lewisburg 62-34 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Center Hill's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Danterius Ellington threw for 180 and 4 touchdowns and D'marius Gillespie had 129 yards receiving. On the ground Kaelin Thomas contributed 168 yards. Jonathan Weeks helped Center Hill's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 51 yards.

The Mustangs' dynamic duo of Ellington and Gillespie proved to be unstoppable against Clarksdale, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Weeks helped Center Hill's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 51 yards.

He went 11-20 with 1 interception.

Jake Harville was a passing and rushing force as the Patriots fell to the Green Wave. He completed 18 passes for 271 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for 9 yards. Harville's favorite target this week was John Ferguson, who caught 4 passes for 107 yards.

Hunter Gross made the biggest impact on defense this week as Center Hill lost to the Wildcats. The 5-foot-9 sophomore forced 1 fumble.

Lake Cormorant's Bailey Walker and Ryan Golden have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-3 quarterback Walker has thrown for 2,777 yards this season, while Golden has 67 catches for 1,092 yards. Diamante Pounds from Saltillo leads the league in rushing with 1,943 yards.

Accruing a total of 20 touchdowns this year, Ellington has thrown for 1,971 yards with 11 interceptions.

Thomas has rushed for 910 yards on 187 carries so far this year.

West Point led the league in scoring this week after putting up 62 points on Lewisburg.
