Monarchs finish spring season 5-0, knock off rival St. John Bosco.

In the biggest high school football game of the spring in California No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) beat No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 34-17 to finish the season a perfect 5-0. Freshman quarterback Elijah Brown threw for over 200 yards and four touchdowns and the win puts the Monarchs in a good position to begin next fall as the No. 1 team in our preseason MaxPreps Top 25 rankings with a lot of talent returning.

The loss dropped the Braves to 5-1 this spring and it was the first time they have tasted defeat since Oct. 25, 2019.

Expect the 2019 MaxPreps national champions to be ranked in the Top 5 to begin next fall.

Three other Top 25 matchup were on tap this week.

Arizona-bound running back James Bohls led No. 15 San Clemente to a 10-7 win over No. 6 Mission Viejo to claim the South Coast League title on Friday. He scored the only touchdown of the night for the Tritons and Sean Harry connected on a game-winning 25-yard field goal as time expired.

No. 22 Alemany (Mission Hills) knocked off No. 16 Serra (Gardena) 25-24 to clinch a share of the Mission League title. The Warriors blocked a punt trailing 24-17 with just over three minutes remaining and Tyler Scott picked it up and returned it for a touchdown. Head coach Casey Clausen elected to go for two and junior quarterback Dylan Gebbia ran it in for what ended up being the game-winning score.

No. 21 Chaminade (West Hills) beat Cathedral (Los Angeles) 42-20 as Alemany, Serra and the Eagles all finished 4-1 in Mission League play.

No. 4 Servite (Anaheim) beat No. 23 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) 42-13 on Thursday in the other Top 25 matchup to finish the spring season 4-2. The Friars only two losses came against No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 St. John Bosco.

Expect the Friars to begin next fall ranked in our preseason Top 25 with Arizona commit Noah Fifita, USC-bound tight end Keyan Burnett and five-star wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan all returning.
