The Cathedral Catholic Dons will challenge the La Jolla Country Day Torreys at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Cathedral Catholic is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They never let Santa Fe Christian get on the board and left with a 2-0 win. The victory was familiar territory for the Dons, who have now won five contests in a row.
Not much got past Levi Uslander, who gave up just six hits and racked up eight Ks to keep Santa Fe Christian off the board.
On the hitting side, Alex Harrington was excellent, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Diezel Hernandez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.
Meanwhile, La Jolla Country Day sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 win over Point Loma on Wednesday. The Torreys haven't had any issues with the Pointers recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Elias Hanley spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because La Jolla Country Day is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 11-12 otherwise.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jackson Norum, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Cathedral Catholic pushed their record up to 18-10 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.3 runs over those games. As for La Jolla Country Day, their win bumped their record up to 18-12.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Cathedral Catholic hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like La Jolla Country Day struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.7 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Cathedral Catholic took their victory against La Jolla Country Day in their previous meeting back in April of 2021 by a conclusive 14-0 score. Do the Dons have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Torreys turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
