Recap: Northeastern Eagles vs. Gates County Red Barons
The Northeastern Eagles won the last time they faced the Gates County Red Barons, and things went their way on Friday too. Northeastern wrapped up 2023 with a 59-41 win over Gates County. The win made it back-to-back wins for Northeastern.
It was another big night for Jasmine Felton, who dropped a double-double on 30 points and 16 rebounds. The contest was her sixth in a row with at least ten points. Sanai Alexander was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Despite the defeat, Gates County saw an underclassman step up: London Barber scored 12 points along with nine rebounds. Barber has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Another player making a difference was Kyndall Banks, who scored ten points along with five steals.
Northeastern's win bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Gates County, their loss dropped their record down to 8-2.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Northeastern will take on Holmes at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Holmes will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 254th, while Northeastern is ranked 69th). Gates County and Martin County will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 3, 2024 without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Martin County is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak.
