Basketball Recap: Jordan Matthewson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Martin County over South Central

If Martin County was riding high fresh off their 85-56 takedown of Gates County last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Martin County Gators took a 61-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of the South Central Falcons on Thursday. The game marked the Gators' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Martin County's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jordan Matthewson, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds. Matthewson is also crushing it when it comes to blocks: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Kamarion Larry, who posted 15 points.

Among those leading the charge was Isaiah Godley, who earned seven points along with nine boards and four steals. That's the most steals he has posted since back in January of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Da'Viaus Johnson, who had five points and eight rebounds.

With the defeat, Martin County broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 4-2. As for South Central, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season.

Martin County wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 56-48 victory against Ayden - Grifton on the 27th. As for South Central, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 43-41 loss against North Pitt on the 27th.
