Football Preview: Johnston Panthers vs. East Greenwich Avengers
The Johnston Panthers will square off against the East Greenwich Avengers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Johnston knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully East Greenwich likes a good challenge.
Johnston is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Lincoln, who was ranked 23rd at the time (Johnston was ranked 20th). The Panthers walked away with a 36-28 win over the Lions on Friday.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Johnston to victory, but perhaps none more so than Yadier Grullon, who picked up 137 receiving yards and one touchdown. Grullon got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 85 yards. Another signal caller making a difference was Ethan Archambeault, who threw for 178 yards and a pair of TDs on only 12 passes.
Meanwhile, East Greenwich strolled past Pilgrim with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 26-7.
Johnston better focus on containing Mark Bradshaw and Spencer Padula as the pair were huge in East Greenwich's win. Bradshaw threw for 149 yards and four touchdowns on only 13 passes, while Padula rushed for 145 yards while picking up 7.6 yards per carry. Those 145 rushing yards gave Padula a new career-high. Owen Lehne also deserves a shout-out for his two scores.
The victory got East Greenwich back to even at 3-3. As for Johnston, their win bumped their record up to 5-1.
