Softball Game Preview: Walden Grove Red Wolves vs. Mica Mountain Thunderbolts

Walden Grove is preparing for their first region matchup of the season on Monday. They are taking a road trip to take on the Mica Mountain Thunderbolts at 5:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Mica Mountain will be up against a hot Walden Grove team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. The Red Wolves blew past Safford 13-2 on Thursday.

Walden Grove let Isabel Higuera and Natalie Holzer run wild. Higuera went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI, while Holzer went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Those three hits gave Higuera a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Patricia Mejia, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Walden Grove was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .469. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .310 or higher in five consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Mica Mountain never let their opponents score on Friday. Everything went their way against Catalina Foothills as they made off with a 16-0 victory. That 16 run margin sets a new team best for the Thunderbolts this season.

Walden Grove's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-6. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Mica Mountain, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-9.

Walden Grove suffered a grim 16-3 defeat to Mica Mountain when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Red Wolves avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
