Baseball Recap: Gary West Side Takes a Loss

Gary West Side had lost 12 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 1-7 to make it 13. They lost 15-5 to the East Chicago Central Cardinals. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cardinals this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 17-7 last Monday.

As for East Chicago Central, the win got them back to even at 6-6. That's two games straight that they have won by exactly ten runs.

For East Chicago Central's part, Carlos Vasquez and Ivan Rojas made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Vasquez pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Rojas tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. East Chicago Central is 2-1 when Rojas allows two or fewer hits, but 4-5 otherwise. At the plate, Vasquez went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run, while Rojas went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those three RBI gave Vasquez a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Abran Gomez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of East Chicago Central's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 5-2 (and 1-4 when he doesn't). Jackyln Becerra also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gary West Side will welcome Marquette Catholic at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for East Chicago Central, they will host Highland at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
