Basketball Recap: Cholla Piles Up the Points Against Amphitheater

You're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that's exactly how it played out for Cholla on Thursday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew the Amphitheater Panthers out of the water with an 86-32 final score. That 54 point margin sets a new team best for the Chargers this season.

Cholla's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Michael Payne, who went 8 for 12 on his way to 18 points in addition to seven assists and six boards. The dominant performance also gave Payne a new career-high in blocks (five). Cyree Jenkins was another key player, going 9 of 13 en route to 24 points and four steals.

Payne wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Cholla was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Amphitheater only racked up two assists.

Several Panthers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cameron Abernathy, who posted seven points and five rebounds. Abernathy has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Jovan Antonio, who scored seven points.

The win (which was Cholla's third in a row) raised their record to 12-3. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 46.7 points. As for Amphitheater, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 11 of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-13 record this season.

Cholla wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 79-64 victory against Douglas on the 27th. As for Amphitheater, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 92-61 defeat against Sahuarita on the 29th.
