Basketball Recap: Leah Shappell's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Leo over Columbia City

Leo entered their contest against Columbia City on Saturday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The matchup between the Lions and the Eagles didn't end well, with the Lions falling 61-46. The Lions lost against the Eagles in their previous head to head back in December of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 65-25 score last time.

Several Lions players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Leah Shappell, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Shappell has been hot for a while, having posted nine or more rebounds the last 11 times she's played. Mackenzie Collins was another key player, shooting 55% from the field en route to 13 points in addition to five boards and five steals.

Leo's defeat dropped their record down to 8-2. As for Columbia City, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Leo will face off against Angola at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Columbia City, they will square off against Homestead at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagles will need to watch out since the Spartans have now posted at least 55 points in their last four contests.
