MIAMI – Booker T. Washington quarterback Torrance Moise led Dade County to a 16-14 win over Broward County in the 13th Annual Nike South Florida All-Star football game at Traz Powell Stadium.
Moise, a senior, stood out in a game that featured 21 Division I-A commitments by completing 3-of-5 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score.
Moise, who earned the game’s MVP award, scored the game’s first touchdown on a 14-yard run to give Dade a 7-0 lead over Broward with 2:21 left in the first quarter.
“Man, it’s an honor to be named MVP,” Moise said. “Representing Dade County, my school and being on the same field with the best high school football players in south Florida, is truly a blessing for me and my family. The award was the icing on the cake.”
Miramar quarterback Eugene Smith, Broward County’s Player of the Year, answered for the Broward All-Stars with an eight-play, 61-yard drive capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Cypress Bay running back Jason Douglas.
Douglas, a University of Pittsburgh verbal, tied the game 7-7 with less than two minutes before halftime.
Smith, a West Virginia pledge, completed 3-of-5 passes for 36 yards on the drive.
In the third quarter, Moise capitalized off a dazzling 26-yard gain by Killian’s Lamar Miller, a University of Miami commit and Miami-Dade County Player of the Year, with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Miami Central wide receiver Jairus Williams.
The 6-foot-5 Williams leaped over St. Thomas Aquinas cornerback Ronnie Kennedy and snatched the pass, helping Dade take a 14-7 lead over Broward with 6:55 left in the third quarter.
Deerfield Beach quarterback Denard Robinson, who saw time at receiver and cornerback, brought Broward back in the game with an electrifying 71-yard touchdown run with 2:40 left in the quarter.
Robinson, who lined up at receiver, ran a reverse and 71 yards later showed south Florida why he is nicknamed, “Shoe Lace.” His tremendous play and blazing speed helped tie the game 14-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
Robinson was also instrumental in the game’s outcome, however it did not favor Broward.
With 6:09 left in the fourth, Robinson was sacked by American High linebacker Andres Trujillo in the end zone. The defensive stop by Trujillo sealed the win for the Dade County All-Stars 16-14.
Broward made one last attempt to steal the win but came up short after a missed 46-yard field goal by Coral Springs’ kicker Carlos Romero with six seconds remaining in regulation.
In its 13th year, Miami-Dade County leads the series 8-5 over Broward.
Notable: Nike, who has supported the event since 1996, has donated $100,000 in product to Miami-Dade and Broward counties. They also encourage high schools to apply for grants through the Broward County Athletics Association and the Miami-Dade County Schools Athletic Association.
“Our goal is to continue the advancement of sports opportunities at local high schools in these communities,” Nike South Brand Manager Scott Henson said.
