Basketball Game Preview: Poteau Pirates vs. Heavener Wolves

Poteau and Heavener are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2016, but not for long. The Poteau Pirates will host the Heavener Wolves at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Poteau has now lost seven straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since December 10.

Last Tuesday, Poteau lost to Eufaula at home by a 54-38 margin. The match marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Meanwhile, Heavener earned a 56-46 victory over Wilburton on Tuesday. Given the Wolves' advantage in MaxPreps' Oklahoma basketball rankings (they are ranked 138th, while the Diggers are ranked 346th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Poteau's loss dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Heavener, their win bumped their record up to 5-3.

Poteau couldn't quite finish off Heavener in their previous meeting back in January of 2024 and fell 60-57. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Heavener's Isaac Cook, who posted 23 points. Now that Poteau knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time?
