Softball Recap: Western Reserve Comes Up Short

Western Reserve extended their losing streak to six on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 2-8 in the process. They lost 13-3 to the South Central Trojans. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Trojans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-6 on Monday.

Western Reserve saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Layken Barnhart, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI. Lilliana Jarrett also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

As for South Central, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games.

On South Central's side, Viola Culler made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Culler was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ella Sanders, who fired off two home runs and five RBI while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Ember Phillips was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.

Looking ahead, Western Reserve will square off against Monroeville at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Roughriders' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Eagles have averaged an impressive 7.7 runs per game this season. As for South Central, they will challenge St. Paul at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Trojans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Flyers have averaged an impressive 8.1 runs per game this season.
