Baseball Game Preview: St. Augustine Yellow Jackets vs. Fernandina Beach Pirates

The St. Augustine Yellow Jackets will head out on the road to square off against the Fernandina Beach Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. St. Augustine has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the contest with six straight defeats, while Fernandina Beach will come in with four straight wins.

St. Augustine lost 11-3 to Spruce Creek on Thursday.

St. Augustine saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brandt Hudgins, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.

Meanwhile, it was close, but on Wednesday Fernandina Beach sidestepped Baker County for a 3-2 victory.

The team relied heavily on Landen Holbrook, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs. That home run was his first of the season.

Fernandina Beach pushed their record up to 15-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for St. Augustine, their loss dropped their record down to 7-11.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. St. Augustine has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Fernandina Beach struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Everything went St. Augustine's way against Fernandina Beach in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, as St. Augustine made off with an 8-2 win. Does St. Augustine have another victory up their sleeve, or will Fernandina Beach turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
