Softball Game Preview: Grapevine Mustangs vs. Richland Royals

The Grapevine Mustangs are taking a road trip to challenge the Richland Royals at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Birdville hit Grapevine with a four-run fourth inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Mustangs lost 8-1 to the Hawks. The Mustangs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Tiana Coburn spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and five unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

Meanwhile, Richland had already won 16 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.7 runs) and they went ahead and made it 17 on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Hawks as they made off with an 8-2 win. The result was nothing new for the Royals, who have now won 15 contests by six runs or more so far this season.

Richland also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Stacy Jennings gave up just two earned runs on one hit and racked up nine Ks.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sam Aguilar, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Sofia Hernandez was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Richland hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least two batters in three consecutive matchups.

Grapevine's defeat dropped their record down to 13-16. As for Richland, their record now sits at 27-2.

Grapevine couldn't quite finish off Richland when the teams last played back in March and fell 3-1. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
