Game recap: 20-point quarter leads McMinn County to defeat of Walker Valley

A big 20-point second quarter helped carry McMinn County (Athens, Tenn.) to a 39-8 victory over Walker Valley (Cleveland, Tenn.) on Saturday.

The Cherokees scored on a Corbin Powers touchdown pass to Blake Powers, a touchdown run by Dre Sanders and a Powers touchdown run in the quarter.

After taking the lead on a touchdown run by Sanders in the first quarter, McMinn County led 39-0 at the half.

MC's standout player in the win was Sanders. The junior running back ran for three touchdowns. He has now scored 10 touchdowns on the season.

The Mustangs' lone touchdown came on a 5-yard pass in the fourth quarter.



The Athens school had given up an average of 16.8 points prior to the contest.

Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 30-10 win for the Cherokees.

In a AAA District 5 game next week McMinn County (5-1) takes on Cleveland, and Walker Valley (3-3) will go up against Soddy Daisy also in a AAA District 5 game.
