Basketball Recap: Cesar Chavez Piles Up the Points Against Dobson

On Tuesday, the Cesar Chavez Champions humbled the Dobson Mustangs with a 71-32 victory. The Champions have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine matches by 24 points or more this season.

Cesar Chavez's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Malia Woodberry led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 16 points and nine assists. Woodberry has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Victoria Ballard was another key player, going 9 for 15 on her way to 21 points.

Cesar Chavez smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Despite the defeat, Dobson saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Lana Shirley dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten boards. That was a full 53.1% of Dobson's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Susana Sheppard, who scored seven points.

Cesar Chavez is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 45.9 points. As for Dobson, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-11.

Cesar Chavez didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, an 86-16 victory against Browne on the 21st. As for Dobson, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 61-27 loss against Mesa on the 17th.
