Basketball Preview: Bishop Kenny Crusaders vs. St. Petersburg Green Devils
The Bishop Kenny Crusaders and the St. Petersburg Green Devils will face off at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Bishop Kenny comes in on six and St. Petersburg on five.
Bishop Kenny saw some tournament action on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Braden River 54-21. The Crusaders have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six games by 28 points or more this season.
Bishop Kenny found their leader in sophomore Kathleen Crawley, who went 7 for 11 on her way to 18 points and five steals. Crawley is becoming a predictor of Bishop Kenny's success: when she posts at least three steals the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Reese Mayer, who posted five points and six steals.
Bishop Kenny smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in four consecutive contests.
While St. Petersburg didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-10), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. In a tight match that could have gone either way, they made off with a 54-53 win over Clearwater Central Catholic.
St. Petersburg's victory bumped their record up to 8-2. As for Bishop Kenny, their win bumped their record up to 9-2.
