Basketball Recap: Coronado Takes a Loss

If Coronado was riding high fresh off their 77-23 takedown of San Ysidro last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Coronado Islanders were just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 73-72 to the Point Loma Pointers. While losing is never fun, the Islanders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 617th, while the Pointers are ranked 280th).

Point Loma's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Grant Stewart, who went 7 of 17 on his way to 23 points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals. Stewart has been hot recently, having posted eight or more boards the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Na'Sean Hardy, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten boards.

Coronado has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-9 record this season. As for Point Loma, the victory (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 14-2.

Coronado will face off against Madison at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Madison is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.5 points per game this season. As for Point Loma, they will take on Canyon Hills at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Point Loma's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last seven games.
