Preview: Southwest Christian School Eagles vs. Midland Christian Mustangs
Southwest Christian School is 0-3 against Midland Christian since October of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Southwest Christian School Eagles will head out on the road to face off against the Midland Christian Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, Southwest Christian School didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Fort Worth Christian, but they still walked away with a 27-21 win. The win was just what Southwest Christian School needed coming off of a 49-0 defeat in their prior game.
Southwest Christian School found their leader in underclassman Bourke Toler, who rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown.
Midland Christian never got on the board in their matchup back in October, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Fort Worth Christian two weeks ago. They claimed a resounding 52-21 victory over the Cardinals on the road.
Midland Christian's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brylee Perez, who rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 10.4 yards per carry, and also picked up 42 receiving yards. Perez really tore up the turf during one magnificent 97-yard run. Another player making a difference was Colton Newsom, who rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown.
Another reason for the win was Midland Christian's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. Leading the way was Isaiah Mathews and his two sacks.
Southwest Christian School's win bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Midland Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 3-5.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's match: Southwest Christian School has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 171.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Midland Christian struggles in that department as they've been even better at 197.4 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Southwest Christian School took a serious blow against Midland Christian in their previous matchup back in November of 2022, falling 41-8. Can Southwest Christian School avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
