Basketball Recap: Mater Academy Charter Falls Despite Big Games from Via Hazelton and Halle Jordan

If Mater Academy Charter was riding high fresh off their 52-19 takedown of Goleman on Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Lions lost 85-64 to the Doral Academy Firebirds on Tuesday. The Lions haven't had much luck with the Firebirds recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

Despite the loss, Mater Academy Charter had strong showings from Halle Jordan, who went 6-for-14 to rack up 19 points and three steals, and Via Hazelton, who posted 17 points. Jordan has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Yakeisha Shillingford, who had seven points and three steals.

Stephanie Vega was her usual excellent self, shooting 60% from the field en route to 23 points and three steals for Doral Academy. Vega continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Camila Velasco was another key player, going 7-for-10 on her way to 15 points.

The defeat was their first on the road , dropping their record down to 6-2. As for Doral Academy, their win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-3.

Mater Academy Charter wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 57-25 victory against Norland on the 10th. As for Doral Academy, they have also already played their next matchup, a 58-25 win against South Dade on the 11th.
