Preview: Saguaro Sabercats vs. St. Mary's Knights
Saguaro is 1-7 against St. Mary since January of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Saguaro Sabercats will head out on the road to take on the St. Mary's Knights at 7:00 p.m. Saguaro will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 129th, while St. Mary's is ranked seventh).
Last Tuesday, Saguaro came up short against Mesquite and fell 61-52. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Saguaro in their matchups with Mesquite: they've now lost seven in a row.
O?shea Bonner put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored 16 points along with two steals. Another player making a difference was Owen Pimbert, who scored eight points.
Meanwhile, St. Mary's came tearing into Thursday's contest with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19 points) and they left with even more momentum. They enjoyed a cozy 77-60 win over Seton Catholic. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Saguaro has been struggling recently, as they've lost eight of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season. As for St. Mary's, they pushed their record up to 14-6 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Saguaro was taken down by St. Mary's 101-64 when the teams last played back in February of 2023. Can Saguaro avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
