Baseball Recap: Cathedral Takes a Loss

Cathedral extended their losing streak to three on Wednesday, dropping them down to 5-4. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 4-2 heartbreaker at the hands of the Jackson Prep Patriots. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Patriots this season, with their most recent loss being a 12-7 defeat on Wednesday.

As for Jackson Prep, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 13-13. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.7 runs over those games.

For Jackson Prep's part, they got a great performance from Kain Sandridge as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over 5.2 innings pitched. Sandridge also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Patriots are 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 10-12 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Wade Smith and Kam Roberts did most of the damage at the plate: Smith went 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Roberts went a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI. Smith is becoming a predictor of Jackson Prep's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 11-12 when he doesn't). Mason McCain also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Cathedral does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Jackson Prep, they will be playing at home against Madison-Ridgeland Academy at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
