Basketball Recap: Lakeland Comes Up Short

Lakeland was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They were beaten by the Grassfield Grizzlies 70-32. While losing is never fun, the Cavaliers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 202nd, while the Grizzlies are ranked 27th).

Lakeland lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Aubrianna Paiz, who posted five points along with three steals and three blocks. She has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. Alainah Overton was another key player, putting up ten points.

Grassfield's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Khadijah Rashid, who went 5-for-10 to rack up 11 points in addition to four steals and four blocks. The dominant performance gave Rashid a new career-high in blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Thompson, who went 7-for-10 en route to 14 points and five rebounds.

Lakeland's defeat dropped their record down to 6-14. As for Grassfield, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-3.

Lakeland wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 62-37 loss against Western Branch on the 13th. As for Grassfield, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 75-47 win against Hickory on the 14th.
