Basketball Recap: Economedes Comes Up Short

Economedes lost against Edinburg North back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Economedes Jaguars came up short against the Edinburg North Cougars, falling 72-49. While losing is never fun, the Jaguars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 935th, while the Cougars are ranked 417th).

When it comes to explaining why Economedes lost, don't look at Nathaniel De La Garza. Despite the final result, he went 8 of 16 en route to 23 points along with five rebounds and three steals. That was a full 46.9% of Economedes' points, marking the seventh time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Aniel Solis, who earned nine points and five boards.

Edinburg North was led to victory by Raul Palacios and Josiah Cruz. Palacios went 12 for 16 on his way to 30 points, while Cruz scored 15 points and six steals. What's more, Cruz also racked up four assists, the most he's had since back in December of 2024. Kiandre Estrada was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Economedes' defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 14-14. As for Edinburg North, their win bumped their record up to 19-13.

Economedes will challenge Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Economedes is facing Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at the right time seeing as Pharr-San Juan-Alamo is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Edinburg North, a feisty cat fight is on tap when the Edinburg North Cougars challenge the Weslaco Panthers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Edinburg North is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.5 points per game this season.
