Basketball Recap: Valley Union Comes Up Short

If Valley Union was feeling good fresh off their 58-11 takedown of Lourdes Catholic last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Valley Union Blue Devils were dealt a 56-25 loss at the hands of the St. David Tigers on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, the Blue Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 264th, while the Tigers are ranked 118th).

Valley Union's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lexi Boss, who posted 12 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. Giovanna Curiel was another key player, putting up five points along with seven boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Valley Union smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

St. David found their leader in sophomore Emma Hart, who went 6 of 14 on her way to 20 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. Hart is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Emelynn Jacquez, who went 6 for 12 en route to 14 points.

Valley Union's record now sits at 7-13. As for St. David, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 16-9 record this season.

Valley Union didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 38-25 victory against Patagonia on the 30th. St. David has also already played their next game, a 30-29 loss against Mogollon on the 30th.
