Basketball Recap: South Ridge's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

It was a good run, but South Ridge unfortunately witnessed the end of their nine-game winning streak on Thursday. They were beaten by the Southwest Leadership Academy Rams 80-44. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Mavericks have suffered since December 9, 2024.

Southwest Leadership Academy got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Edgar Avila out in front who went 9 of 16 en route to 20 points and six steals. Avila continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Raja Williams, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 boards.

South Ridge's loss was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 7-1 and their overall record down to 10-2. As for Southwest Leadership Academy, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-1.

South Ridge and Southwest Leadership Academy should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings. South Ridge will take on Western SciTech at 6:00 p.m. on January 30th up 174 places (122 vs. 296). South Ridge will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak alive. Similarly, Southwest Leadership Academy (ranked 103rd) will meet Maricopa Institute of Technology (ranked 287th) at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
