Baseball Recap: Murphysboro Comes Up Short

Murphysboro managed to slip by Carterville the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Red Devils lost 9-1 to the Lions on Monday. The Red Devils' defeat continues a trend for the team, making it three in a row.

Murphysboro got a good showing from Austin Hunter, who tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Furthermore, Hunter didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in May of 2024.

On the hitting side, Mason Bastien made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and one run. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last eight games he's played. Another player making a difference was Bryson Canaley, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Murphysboro's loss dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Carterville, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-7 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Murphysboro will host Anna-Jonesboro at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Carterville, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Herrin at 4:30 p.m.
